I think it makes sense to trim a little and so that's what we've done across our portfolios," he said. Also, corporate tax rates might go up as the reduction from 2017 is set to expire, Gerstner said. "We started the year expecting six rate cuts. Now we're down to maybe zero rate cuts," he said. "We want to be in the names like Nvidia that are reaccelerating, in the names like Amazon and Google and Microsoft and Snowflake that we believe are reaccelerating.

But now that extra spending money is gone, economists are concerned about what comes next. That means many Americans have more debt than savings and suggests “that American households fully spent their pandemic-era savings as of March 2024,” they wrote in a recent report. Consumer spending plays a crucial role in driving economic growth in the United States, and it has shown remarkable strength over the past two years. “A continuing strong labor market could help consumers maintain spending patterns similar to those observed recently, even without pandemic-era savings,” they wrote. What comes next: Disney, Airbnb, Uber, Anheuser-Busch, Tapestry and Dillards all report later this week — investors will look for any comments about how consumer spending, or lack thereof, is altering revenue forecasts for 2024.

Alex Kendall, 29, is the co-founder and CEO of autonomous driving startup Wayve. British startup Wayve on Tuesday said it had raised $1.05 billion in an investment round led by Japan's SoftBank to accelerate the growth of its self-driving car technology. The Series C funding round included new investor U.S. chipmaker Nvidia and existing investor, software giant Microsoft , which is a major backer of AI firms. Founded in 2017, Wayve is one of a multitude of startups looking to enable autonomous driving — technology that enables cars to effectively drive without humans at the helm. Unlike Tesla , which manufactures its own cars, Wayve licenses its self-driving technology to other firms, including retailers and automakers.

Billionaire investor Stanley Druckenmiller revealed Tuesday that he has slashed his big bet in chipmaker Nvidia earlier this year, saying the swift artificial intelligence boom could be overdone in the short run. "We did cut that and a lot of other positions in late March. "I'm not Warren Buffett; I don't own things for 10 or 20 years. I wish I was Warren Buffett," he added. Nvidia has been the primary beneficiary of the recent technology industry obsession with large artificial intelligence models, which are developed on the company's pricey graphics processors for servers.

At his annual shareholder meeting in Omaha, Nebraska, the 93 year-old co-founder, chairman and CEO of Berkshire Hathaway issued a stark warning about the potential dangers of the technology. “We let a genie out of the bottle when we developed nuclear weapons,” he said Saturday. JPMorgan Chase, the world’s largest bank by market capitalization, is also exploring the potential of generative AI within its own ecosystem, Dimon said. Dozens of AI industry leaders, academics and even some celebrities have signed a statement warning of an “extinction” risk from AI. “Mitigating the risk of extinction from AI should be a global priority alongside other societal-scale risks such as pandemics and nuclear war,” the statement said.

Braithwaite, who worked at Intel in the 1980s, said Intel's process engineers were the company's "crown jewels." Intel doesn't have a GPU competitor to Nvidia's AI accelerators, but it has an AI chip called Gaudi 3. For comparison, AMD expects about $2 billion in annual AI chip revenue.

Jamie Dimon, CEO of JPMorgan Chase, testifies during the Senate Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs Committee hearing titled Annual Oversight of Wall Street Firms, in the Hart Building on Dec. 6, 2023. Jamie Dimon, the veteran CEO and chairman of JPMorgan Chase , said he was convinced that artificial intelligence will have a profound impact on society. In his annual letter to shareholders released Monday, Dimon chose AI as the first topic in his update of issues facing the biggest U.S. bank by assets — ahead of geopolitical risks, recent acquisitions and regulatory matters. But his focus on AI, first mentioned in Dimon's annual letter in 2017, stood out. Enthusiasm for AI has fueled the meteoric rise of chipmaker Nvidia and helped propel tech names to new heights.

"It's clear that lots of investors have no idea what AI is," Cramer said on "Mad Money." "In fairness, the reason they have no idea is because we really haven't even seen anything transformative from the AI camp just yet." Cramer cautioned that it isn't prudent to so quickly dismiss AI bellwethers like chipmaker Nvidia in favor of high-performing refinery and dollar store stocks. "In terms of innings, I don't think the AI game has even started yet," Cramer said. Expanding his baseball metaphor, Cramer said AI is in its batting practice stage but may eventually replace many "undesirable" jobs involving physical labor.

New York (CNN) — Is the artificial intelligence boom on Wall Street a bubble primed to burst or the real deal? That’s the question investors have wrestled with since the Magnificent Seven tech stocks began turbocharging a powerful market rally last year. “A new bubble within a bubble like this, even one limited to a handful of stocks, is totally unprecedented,” he wrote in a Monday blog post. “The long-run prospects for the broad US stock market here look as poor as almost any other time in history,” he wrote. Still, the notorious market bear sees some areas of opportunity in the stock market.

Just_super | E+ | Getty ImagesThe European Union's parliament on Wednesday endorsed the world's first major set of regulatory ground rules to govern the mediatized artificial intelligence at the forefront of tech investment. President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, described the act as trail-blazing, saying it would enable innovation, while safeguarding fundamental rights. "Artificial intelligence is already very much part of our daily lives. Born in 2021, the EU AI Act divides the technology into categories of risk, ranging from "unacceptable" — which would see the technology banned — to high, medium and low hazard. "The AI Act is not the end of the journey, but, rather, the starting point for a new model of governance built around technology.

Jeremy Grantham, famed investor with a history of calling bear markets, issued a bearish long-term outlook for the stock market on Tuesday, seeing the dramatic rally in artificial intelligence-related stocks as a speculative bubble. He foresaw the dot-com bubble bursting in 2000 and the 2008 bear market, and he also correctly called the bear market in 2022. The S & P 500 has rallied since late October 2023 to hit consecutive record highs, powered by megacap technology names. Dominant AI chipmaker Nvidia has rallied another 81% this year, following a near 240% advance in 2023. Grantham, now 85, believes the full effects of technological revolutions like AI often don't materialize until after an initial bubble bursts.

Equity strategist Andrew Garthwaite warned investors could be in for a "difficult phase" and end the year flat. The S & P 500 and Dow Jones Industrial Average reached record highs last week, with the former breaking above 5,100 for the first time on an intraday basis. The S & P 500 and Nasdaq are both up more than 6% this year, and the Dow has climbed 3.8%.
